Arduino HardwareThe OpenIT Lab at IT-oLogy offered a Basics of the Microcontroller/Arduino workshop for the first time to the general public on Saturday, July 14. The response was so overwhelming approximately 15-20 people had to be turned away and directed to a second offering.

Attendees were given hands-on experience with building and designing Arduino-based electronics projects. The Italian-designed Arduino is a low cost microcontroller and one of the leading technologies in the new open hardware movement.

Projects included getting started with the simple Blink circuit, Arduino’s version of “Hello World”, then exploring how to customize the blink rate and brightness by tweaking the source code and how to make the microcontroller aware of its surroundings by using photoresistors and pushbuttons. Participants also learned about electronic circuits, digital and analog signals and basic programming using the Arduino software.

The second Microcontroller/Arduino workshop is being planned now with a tentative delivery date scheduled for September.

Open IT Lab

Thirty people attended the Ubuntu 101 Installation & Overview workshop held Thursday evening, July 26. Among those were students, professors and local IT professionals. Instructors Jeremy Bicha and Ben Francis familiarized participants with Ubuntu and walked them through the complete installation process. Many attendees brought their own computers and some used IT-oLogy provided laptops to learn the installation process. Also discussed were key components of the operating system as well as the high quality free software made available such as word processing applications, photo management tools, web browsers and games. Attendees left the workshop knowing how to install Ubuntu and a lot more about the world’s third most popular operating system. Ubuntu 102, the advanced Ubuntu workshop, will be offered again in August.

Ben Francis, Columbia Linux Users Group President, helps attendees install Ubuntu.

Submitted by Brett Hall, Career Services Advisor, ECPI University

WASHINGTON, DC -The Student Veterans of America Executive Director, Michael Dakduk, recently met with chapter leaders and student veterans at ECPI University’s Northern Virginia Campus. ECPI University, a for-profit institution of higher learning, invited Mr. Dakduk and other leaders in the veteran service community to the ECPI campus in Manassas, VA.

”There is a great deal of controversy surrounding for-profit institutions of higher learning because of a few bad actors. I want to be very clear when I say that this issue does not plague the entire for-profit sector. This is evidenced by ECPI’s willingness to be open and transparent about their university,” said Mr. Dakduk. “I was very impressed with the ECPI administration and SVA leadership on campus and consider ECPI’s SVA chapters to be model student veteran organizations. I hope other higher education institutions, both for-profit and not-for-profit, invite SVA to learn more about their campus veteran programs.”

”The needs of student veterans are different from the average college student and these needs are better met with the relative experiences and camaraderie only available from fellow veterans. That’s why I’m a proud member of the Student Veterans of America here at ECPI University. I’m proud of the support the school gives our student veterans. We drive our agenda and ECPI backs us up. No other student organization garners the same respect or carries the same clout as SVA,” said Felix Talamantes, a Navy student veteran pursuing his B.S. in Business Management.

”ECPI University has a large, dynamic veteran population and we are honored to have Student Veterans of America recognize our chapters as model student veteran organizations. ECPI takes the responsibility of educating veterans very seriously and we have a long history of helping veterans in our communities transition from the military to the classroom to successful careers in the workforce. The addition of SVA chapters on our campuses has significantly enhanced our veterans’ college experience and success by offering a forum for SVA member support of fellow veterans, and we look forward to continuing–and strengthening–our relationship with SVA,” said Mark Dreyfus, President of ECPI University.

Summer Split

“I’m a 7th grader. Who would have thought a 7th grader could do this!”

The smile on my face just got bigger when I heard one sweet 7th grader say this today at Summer Split. It was one of those programs we do where I could not stop smiling. There were laughing children, smiling faces, excited eyes. This was a group of 23 middle school students who were so into the IT activities that it was hard to break them away for pizza and banana splits! These students learned how to make their own ethernet cables and program video games. They talked nonstop – asking questions, giving ideas, helping each other.

Today would not have been possible without a few folks I have to mention. First, our volunteers. Without a volunteer army, we cannot run programs. I applaud some key volunteers from SCANA, Pandoodle, USC and JCCT for making today happen.

  • SCANA Volunteers: Jamesetta James, Natasha Wright and Ken Broome
  • Pandoodle: Raghav Badiger
  • JCCT: Joseph Strenk
  • USC Student Curtis Thorne

As much as I want to write about today, though, I should let these awesome kids speak for themselves!

We took some pictures and video on the iPad, and quickly using iMovie, we created a short video highlighting Summer Split. Enjoy!
